Congress Poised to Act on Diesel Pollution
Written by Jonathan Scott, Clean Water Action’s interim Communications Director
What if there was a way to save lives in communities across the country that would also protect and create jobs, improve children’s health, reduce global warming pollution and protect our water?
That is exactly what the popular Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) has been doing since 2005. That is the legislation, first passed with solid, bipartisan support, to establish a voluntary national program offering grants and loans to states and communities for fixing outdated, polluting diesel technology.
DERA’s success, the program’s continued bipartisan support in Congress, and sustained grassroots campaigning by Clean Water Action and allies like the Clean Air Task Force, all contributed to the U.S. Senate’s unanimous approval of a 5-year extension of the program yesterday, December 16.
